Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway...

I remember when it came to bringing out my first children’s book. I searched high and low for a PR expert who could help me get more visible, and make those all-important parents aware of my story and the messages it contained.

I reasoned that even though I had several years PR experience under my belt, I’d never publicised a book before and so surely it was better to work with those who had. Except I ended up working with a team who hadn’t really done this either. Fair play to them, I really enjoyed working with them. It felt like I wasn’t doing everything alone and their advice was invaluable. There’s definitely something about having a second pair of eyes on what you’re doing.

But when it came to the big features in Female First, Woman & Home, Daily Mirror, Huffington Post and Gransnet - it was actually me behind all of that. I also figured out a way to leverage my contacts and garner quotes from well known personalities to maximum effect.

And that’s the point of this post.

Whilst you might be thinking right now you don’t know where to start when it comes to securing PR, I want to let you know that anything is possible and you probably know far more than you give yourself credit for.

That contact you once made and have nurtured on and off for years - call them.

That person who knows a friend of a friend, see whether they can help.

Often what holds us back from believing in ourselves is well, ourselves.

And that’s what I want to remind you about with this post. If you’re scared of the reaction to your story, or fearful of what people might say, just close your eyes and take that initial leap. In other words, feel the fear and do it anyway.

Please don’t shy away from opportunities that present themselves to you.

Instead of thinking that it’s all about you try and refocus. Understand that by spreading the message about what you do, or how you have managed to get to where you are, you are helping others.

Surely that’s part of the reason that you started your business in the first place? To help others get a transformation in their lives; to teach them and guide them using your expertise and knowledge.

If you think of PR as an extension of this - then really what’s holding you back from just going for it? x
